A heat pump moves heat instead of only creating it, which can mean lower operating costs than electric resistance heat in many conditions. Variable-capacity models run longer at steadier output for even temperatures and quieter operation. For extreme cold, dual-fuel setups pair a heat pump with a gas furnace so you always have a backup heat source.

How a Heat Pump Works With Your Furnace

In cooling mode, a heat pump works like an air conditioner: refrigerant absorbs heat indoors and releases it outside. In heating mode, that cycle reverses — the outdoor coil harvests heat from outdoor air (even at low temperatures on cold-climate models), and your indoor coil warms the air your furnace fan moves through the ductwork. Your thermostat and controls coordinate staging between the heat pump and furnace when both are part of the system.
